Zero-Waste Beauty Swaps That Actually Perform
Here's the bar for zero-waste beauty recommendations: they have to actually work. Not "good for a sustainable option". Not "you'll get used to it". Actually, genuinely, legitimately work.
We're not interested in green sacrifice. The swaps below are ones that perform as well as — or better than — what they replace.
Solid shampoo and conditioner bars
The swap that confuses people the most before they try it, and converts them hardest after. A good solid shampoo bar can last two to three times as long as a liquid shampoo in a plastic bottle, and the formula technology has come a long way. Look for bars without sulfates or silicones — they'll work with your hair rather than build up on it.
Conditioner bars took longer to catch up, but they're genuinely there now. The key is leaving them in contact with your hair for a minute or two before rinsing.
Reusable cotton rounds
Single-use cotton pads are one of those beauty habits so normal it took a while to notice they're a bit absurd. Washable cotton rounds do exactly the same job — removing cleanser, applying toner, whatever your routine calls for — and a good set will last years. Rinse after use, pop in a mesh bag, wash with your regular laundry.
A bamboo or compostable toothbrush
Not skincare exactly, but part of your bathroom routine. Compostable bamboo toothbrushes perform identically to plastic ones and don't spend the next 400 years in landfill. Easy win.
Refillable deodorant
Conventional deodorant packaging creates a lot of plastic waste. Refillable options — where you replace just the product inside a reusable case — cut that right back. There are brilliant vegan and aluminium-free options that work well for most people.
Concentrated cleansers and serums
Some brands are moving toward highly concentrated formulas in smaller packaging — you add water at home. This cuts packaging significantly (less water in the product = less weight and volume to ship) and means you use exactly what you need, nothing more.
Package-free or minimal-packaging moisturisers
Moisturisers in glass jars or recyclable aluminium tins sidestep the plastic pump bottle entirely. Many indie brands are making this choice by default because they've thought carefully about their packaging from the start.
