Your Ethical Summer Kit: 8 Products to Have Ready Before December
By October, summer is no longer a distant concept. The days are stretching, the UV index is climbing, and if you've spent the last few months in cosy winter mode, your skin (and bathroom shelf) probably needs a bit of a rethink.
The good news: you don't need to overhaul everything. A smart ethical summer kit is more about intentional additions than wholesale replacement. Here are the eight things worth having sorted before December arrives and the real heat kicks in.
1. An SPF 50+ You'll Actually Wear Every Day
This is non-negotiable, and it's worth saying again even if we just said it in last month's SPF guide: Australian UV is serious. An ethical SPF that goes on smoothly and doesn't make you look like you've been dusted in chalk is the cornerstone of any summer kit.
What to look for: SPF 50+ broad spectrum, cruelty-free certified, and a formula that suits your skin type. Lightweight gel finishes for oily or combination skin; something with a bit more moisture for drier types. It should be something you enjoy wearing — because you're going to wear it every single day.
2. A Lightweight Gel Moisturiser
Your rich winter moisturiser served you well, but summer calls for something that hydrates without sitting heavy on the skin. A gel-cream or water-gel formula delivers the moisture hit your skin still needs without the weight that can feel stifling in heat.
Bonus: gel moisturisers tend to play well under SPF and makeup, which makes your morning routine faster and easier.
3. A Vitamin C Serum
If there's one active ingredient that earns its place in a summer routine, it's vitamin C. It brightens the skin, supports your SPF's protective work, and addresses the kind of pigmentation and uneven tone that can flare up with sun exposure. Apply it in the morning, before moisturiser and SPF.
Look for a stable formulation in opaque or UV-protective packaging — vitamin C oxidises quickly and an orange or brown serum is past its prime.
4. After-Sun Care for Face and Body
Even the most diligent SPF wearer gets sun exposure. After-sun products aren't just for when you've overdone it at the beach — they're a smart part of any summer evening routine. Look for something cooling and hydrating with skin-barrier-supporting ingredients like aloe vera, centella asiatica, or panthenol.
We wrote a whole post on after-sun skincare earlier this year that's worth bookmarking for the warmer months ahead.
5. A Body Oil or Lightweight Body Lotion
Body care in summer tends to get neglected. But your skin below the neck needs hydration too — especially if you're spending time in salt water, chlorine pools, or air-conditioned spaces (which are extremely drying). A lightweight body oil absorbs quickly and doesn't leave you feeling greasy, which makes it far more likely you'll actually use it.
A note on body oils: the greasy concern is mostly a myth. The right formula, applied to slightly damp skin after a shower, absorbs beautifully and leaves skin looking genuinely luminous. (We debunked the body oil myths properly in an earlier post if you want the full rundown.)
6. A Facial Mist or Cooling Spray
Not a luxury — genuinely useful in summer. A facial mist with hydrating or soothing ingredients gives you a quick moisture boost throughout the day, is brilliant for setting makeup, and the cooling effect in the heat is its own reward. Keep one in the fridge. Thank us later.
7. SPF for Lips
Lips are one of the most exposed and most neglected spots when it comes to sun protection. The skin is thinner here, has no melanin, and is genuinely susceptible to UV damage. A tinted lip balm with SPF is one of the easiest additions to make — you're probably already applying something, so you might as well make it count.
8. A Reef-Safe, Vegan Body SPF
This one is separate from your facial SPF because the quantities are different and because reef-safe matters more when you're in the water. Look for a mineral formula (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) without oxybenzone or octinoxate, which are the filters most commonly associated with coral reef damage.
If you're headed to the Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsundays, or really any natural waterway this summer, this one's non-negotiable.
A Quick Note on Building Your Kit
You don't have to buy everything at once. If your budget is tight, start with SPF and after-sun — those two have the biggest impact on your skin's health through the Australian summer. Add the rest as you run out of existing products or find something that genuinely calls to you.
Ethical shopping includes not buying things you don't need. A thoughtful kit of eight products you'll actually use beats a shelf full of half-finished bottles any day.
Everything in our summer range at The V Spot has been through our ethical vetting process — cruelty-free, predominantly vegan, genuinely good.
